9 Ways to Keep Going When the Going Gets Tough

We all go through a time in our lives when we don’t feel like doing anything. Perhaps, we are just tired of putting in the effort to make our life better or reach our goals. We all are well aware of this feeling, but maybe not all of us know how to keep going when the going gets tough.

But today, all of us will learn together to keep going when the going gets tough.

When something like this happens in our life, we get frightened, thinking about what will happen now. This is because we can’t afford to waste our time procrastinating, or maybe we don’t have time to delay our upcoming tasks or projects.

In those moments of life, be patient. Because the importance of patience in achieving goals is immense. If you let yourself immerse in your negative thoughts, you will get into the mentality that you can’t meet your targets.

Don’t think that there is no way to get out of this situation. I know at this time, you’re anxious, and you can’t see things clearly.

How to keep going when the going gets tough

Here are 9 ways to keep going when the going gets tough that will surely help you;

1.  Find ways to make you feel better

Thinking with a relaxed mind about what makes you the happiest might help you overcome frustration. There is always something that makes us super excited, no matter what. For me, it’s food and self-care. That’s where my money goes. But, if spending money on something makes me money, then I don’t mind doing it. If you’re someone like me, who enjoys unwinding at a spa or eating in one of your favorite restaurants, then you can do the same.

To keep going when the going gets tough, try anything that can simply make you happy at the moment.

It could be spending a day at the resort or a beach or as simple as meeting your best friend who can uplift your mood.

The motive is to make yourself happy, even if it means being happy just for a few hours. It will boost your mood and declutter your mind from negative thoughts. It will help you feel much better and prevent the situation being worse.

2.  Ponder over your situation

When you’re done making yourself better and improving your mood, ponder your situation with a clear mind. It’s easy to be demotivated when things don’t go your way, but when you review your circumstances, you’ll find the positive and how you can deal with them.

It will encourage you to keep going because now you have started to see life from a different perspective

Pondering your situation also allows you to amend your mistakes and try again. When you gain courage and start doing something again, you’re more likely to do it better than on the first attempt. As for now, you know the mistakes you’ve made in the past, and you will now correct them.

3.  Appreciate your strengths and efforts

Making mistakes doesn’t mean you fail to accomplish something. It simply means that you will not repeat them again. Don’t get disheartened because this will make you feel down.

Instead, appreciate all the hours you’ve put in with strength and effort. Most people don’t even dare to take the first step. It’s the determined ones that dare to try. And when they fail to make it happen in the first attempt, they remain steady. That’s how successful people are made, with resilience, determination, and consistency.

4.  Let go of the past

Let go of the past when you have taken measures to refrain from your mistakes. Remember the lesson it taught you, and forget everything that has happened and how it made you feel.

It’s over now, and as soon as you accept it, it’s better for your own good. You need to let go of the past to come out of the emotional trauma you’ve been bearing for so long.

Acknowledge your mistakes and move on; this is the best way to keep going when the going gets tough.

5.  Stick to your purpose

When you appreciate your efforts and let go of the past, it energizes you to focus on your purpose. It helps you remember why you started initially. You’ve mentally prepared yourself to keep going when you reach this stage.

Especially when you’ve come back to your why, it becomes manageable for you to start working again towards your destination.

But sometimes our why is limited to a certain period, like I will reach a specific goal within 6 months and assume you couldn’t. Don’t be sad that you failed if you weren’t able to accomplish it in 6 months. Your ‘why’ should always be something that will impact your life in a positive way or bring more happiness to your life. It will motivate you to stick to your true purpose and keep going when the going gets tough.

6.  Seek help from a friend

Good friends and our family play a pivotal role in motivating us to do better. I’ve always asked for help from my family members or trusted friends to keep going when the going gets tough.

There’s no shame in seeking help from loved ones. That’s what relationships are for. To be each other’s support system in hard times.

Maybe today, you’re going through a hard time seeking help, and tomorrow they might need you. Everyone faces up and downs; you shouldn’t be hiding your worries from your friends because it isn’t something to be embarrassed about. If someone makes you feel bad about it, you should take this as a sign that this person isn’t your true friend. Because true friends never leave you in times of adversity.

7.  Use future thinking to motivate yourself

In simple words, future thinking means visualizing the impact of your actions on your future and how your current efforts will reap their fruits. To keep going when the going gets tough, use the technique of future thinking.

Future thinking motivates you to keep going and helps you do things better. When you think about the future and your dreams, you’re more likely to work hard towards your goals. Visualizing everything you want right now, burns a desire in you to reach the future. And for this reason, you keep going.

8.  Set small achievable goals

It’s overwhelming to even think about doing everything at once. Stop fanaticizing that you’re going to achieve it. Due to this mentality, people become discouraged and can’t even take the first step.

Break your goals into small, manageable tasks. It’s better to keep going and achieve small goals than to set a big goal and never be able to achieve it.

Make a planner and write all the possible steps you will have to take to reach your destination. Now, in bullet points, write small achievable targets. Remember, don’t just sit and plan the entire month. We all know that we won’t be following it.

Instead, give yourself daily targets and cross them when you achieve them. So, make daily targets for 7 days in one sitting and repeat this process each week. I am sure you’ll be surprised by the results; this technique has worked wonders for me. I hope it will help you too.

9.  Celebrate your accomplishments

To build momentum, reward yourself for your accomplishments. It could be a small treat, but this will keep you engaged in achieving more goals.

Getting into the momentum of fulfilling daily tasks makes you productive, and it becomes easy to keep going when the going gets tough.

You shouldn’t wait to be happy only when you’ve reached your goals. But, make your journey enjoyable by celebrating small. And if you keep going, one day you will be celebrating big!

The Final Word

We all stop moving forward at some point in our lives. I know coping with this situation is difficult. But, the above tips that I have shared with you always help me keep going when the going gets tough.

I hope you will apply these to your life and see a significant difference. No matter what happens in life, never quit. Always remember your ‘why’ and keep going. Because one day, you’ll look back and be proud of yourself that you kept going.

If things are getting tough, don’t hold yourself back, thinking you couldn’t make it to the end. Your hard work will bring your desired results. Just believe in yourself and keep going!
